I am looking for modern, energy-efficient light bulbs to replace old tube-style fluorescent bulbs. Are they out there and is there a rebate on them? If they are available, is the light softer than the old fluorescents?

Options are available--read on.

There are more efficient “tube style” fluorescent lamps that will provide better quality light than old T12 fluorescent lamps, but if you are looking for softer light, you may want to consider a different style of light fixture. Many new high efficiency light fixtures utilize more efficient (T8 or T5) fluorescent lamps which are hidden behind a diffuser. This has the effect of softening the light because you are not looking directly at the lamp. There are incentives for business customers to purchase high- efficiency, low glare fixtures but they need to meet very specific performance criteria. Consult with your contractor to make sure that they will qualify for incentives, or have them call Focus on Energy for more information.
