Water Heaters

Can I really save money by turning down my hot water heater setting?

Yes you can, but be careful not to set it too low.

Yes, for each 10°F reduction in water temperature, you can save between 3%–5% in energy costs. However, there are safety issues to consider. Legionella Pneumophilia (the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease) can thrive in water temperatures below 120°F. At 140°F water can cause third degree burns in 1 to 5 seconds. A setting of 120°F to 125°F reflects the best compromise between energy savings, restricting disease and preventing burns.
