In most homes, the temperature of the water heater should be set between 120°F and 125°F to restrict bacterial growth in the water and prevent scalding. You can check the water temperature at the faucet closest to the water heater. Run the water for a few minutes to ensure it's at peak temperature and test the temperature of the water coming directly out of the faucet with a meat or cooking thermometer.
