Renewable Energy

Hello. I am a commercial property owner looking to install solar PV and hot water systems. I have FOCUS coupons for the site assessments and will be having them soon. My question is what, if we go ahead with the installations using FOCUS grants, happens should we decide to sell the property? Is the new owner bound by the agreements? Are we required to pay back any assistance we have received?

There are no penalties if the system remains in place.

Good questions! I'm glad you are doing your homework in advance of installing a solar system.

A Focus on Energy grant recipient agrees to operate the renewable energy equipment, at the location proposed and as described in the grant application, for at least three years. Should you sell the property, including the renewable energy system, there are no penalties as long as the system remains in place and operating for the three-year minimum. Likewise, if you decide to move the solar equipment with you to your next location and that site is located in an eligible utility territory, then there are no penalties and you retain your full financial incentive. The only scenario in which you may have to pay back any of the Focus incentive is if you move your system to an ineligible utility territory or out-of-state, in which case we may need to retroactively prorate our reward.
